Starbucks launched vegan beef in 57 stores in Indonesia this week.
The locations featuring the new plant-based menu item are in Jakarta, Tangerang, Bogor, Bekasi, and Bali. The beefless chunks from Green Butcher are featured in 3 new menu items:
- Plant-based Focaccia Bread
- Plant-based Sloppy Jo
- Plant-based Wellington Pocket
Each of the items contains dairy or eggs, making them unsuitable for vegans. However, the beefless chunks in the menu items are vegan and made from soy, chickpeas, mushrooms, and seitan. While it’s not a huge win for vegans since they’re only vegetarian, it’s still a big step in the right direction.
Starbucks Shifts To Plant-Based
Over the years, Starbucks has slowly incorporated more plant-based options into its menu. Recently, they featured coconut milk and a vegetarian wrap in their Spring menu.
Additionally, they introduced a vegan Beyond Burger to their menu. But, similar to their new beefless chunks, the Beyond burgers are not suitable for vegans because they’re sandwiched between egg and cheese.
This year, Starbucks announced possibly the best news of all: They’re making a dominant shift towards plant-based menu items.
While vegans can usually find plenty of non-dairy options, like soy milk, almond milk, coconut milk, and now oat milk at Starbucks, the chain is lacking in food items. Many items are suitable for vegetarians but few are suitable for vegans. With their latest shift towards a plant-based menu, we can only hope to see more %100 vegan-friendly items being featured and added to menus across the nation.
In the meantime, seeing more vegetarian options featured with vegan elements is still a really positive sight and a step in the right direction.
