Each time I used a vending machine at college it let me down. They’re often full of non-vegan candy, unappetizing beverages, and, occasionally, a cold sandwich. Students at the University of Northern Florida, Ohio State University, and Xavier University among others are experiencing something totally different and it’s frankly quite exciting.

Pizza ATMs are growing in popularity and with good reason. Now, if you’re thinking, “But wait, this is supporting non-vegan pizza!!” bare with me.

According to the Pizza ATM website, the steps to using the ATM machine are as follows:
1- “Prepare and pre-cook the base of your gourmet pizzas and add fresh toppings.”
2- “Put the pizzas in their boxes and place them in the cold storage”
3- “The Pizza ATM® vending machine sells your pizzas hot or cold 24/7”

With these steps, vegans pizzas could easily be added to the roster and offered via a Pizza ATM! With vegan options growing in popularity, it’s not far-fetched to think that once the Pizza ATMs become more prevalent, more vegan options will be made available.

Currently, some students are struggling to have access to food at all and that’s where the Pizza ATM is coming in for the University of Northern Florida.

Before getting the Pizza Atm, the campus had a “food desert” that made it hard for certain students to access food between the hours of midnight and 3:00 am.

Though the machine costs $60,000, Vince Smyth, associate vice president of Administration and Finance for UNF, said it’s an investment in the care and feeding of students living in the Osprey Crossings residence complex inside the campus periphery near Kernan Boulevard. “The reality is that this particular area of the campus, the 500 students who are living in this area do not have anything other than our regular vending machines for snacks and sodas. Whereas our other resident students have good opportunities for hot foods right through 3 a.m.,” he said, according to Jacksonville.com.

Anytime food becomes more readily accessible in an area, we’re one step closer to having vegan food become more readily accessible in that same area.

I, for one, cannot wait until the day when Pizza ATMs are everywhere and they’re all offering vegan options! What do you think?
