Are Oreos Vegan? Guide To Vegan Oreo Flavors 2021

Are Oreos Vegan? Guide To Vegan Oreo Flavors 2021

Many people are unsure if Oreos are vegan. It’s actually pretty controversial within the vegan community and there’s a good reason for that.

For starters, most Oreos don’t contain animal products. However, they are manufactured in a space that uses animal products, so they’re not suitable for those with milk allergies because there’s a risk of cross-contamination.

It’s not black and white.

Though many Oreo products contain vegan ingredient lists, when we asked Oreo in an email if they had any vegan products, they replied that they couldn’t guarantee any of their products are vegan and their products are not suitable for vegans. We suspect this is due to no Oreo products being labeled or certified as vegan.

Beyond that, some Oreo flavors may be vegan in one country and not in another country – even if the ingredient list is the same.

White Sugar:

Oreos contain plain white sugar, which may be processed with bone char. Bone char helps the sugar achieve a bright white color – but it’s not listed as an ingredient on sugar that uses it. Since sugar is only processed with bone char and doesn’t contain bone char, it’s hard to know if one sugar company is vegan or not. With Oreos specifically, we don’t even know what sugar brand or company they work with. In some countries, the sugar may use bone char, but it might not in other countries – it really depends on the specific sugar in that region of the world.

White sugar is not something all vegans avoid, but if you prefer to avoid it then it’s best to avoid Oreos.

Confectioner’s Glaze

Confectioner’s glaze is a nice way of saying lac bug resin. It’s made directly from shellac, a resin secretion produced by lac bugs, primarily in Thailand and India. We contacted a shellac harvester from India and they shared that it takes about 300,000 lac bugs to produce 1 kilogram of shellac. Lac bugs naturally have short lifespans and aren’t intentionally killed during the harvest of the resin, but many female bugs and eggs do die. Peta quotes that ~100,000 lac bugs die to produce 1 pound of resin, which is misleading since that number includes those lac bugs dying of natural causes, like old age. Even so, much like honey, it’s nearly impossible to harvest shellac without some death to the bugs – especially in large-scale operations.

Confectioner’s glaze is currently found in the Birthday Cake flavored Oreos.

Palm Oil

Though vegan by nature, those who are vegan for animal welfare often avoid palm oil which is found in nearly all Oreos products.

Vegan and Non-Vegan Oreo Flavors

We’ve listed all of the current vegan Oreos and non-vegan Oreos below, along with their ingredients. Note: We gathered this information directly from Oreo’s website.

Shortly put, all non-dipped Oreos are vegan except for the Birthday Cake Flavor Oreos that contain shellac (confectioner’s glaze). Vegan Oreos include the limited-edition Lady Gaga Oreos and Brookie-O Oreos.

Any Oreos that contain a dip or glaze are not vegan, including the new OreoiD “make your own.”

How To Start A Mason Jar Herb Garden

How To Start A Mason Jar Herb Garden

Nothing jazzes up a meal quite like fresh herbs. I often long for cilantro, basil, oregano, and parsley to enhance a meal and add healthy, satisfying flavor. Without a green thumb, I’ve struggled to keep even succulents alive (I even managed to kill a cactus that was sold to me as “you literally don’t have to do anything to it!”) So, I leave the gardening up to my partner. But, he doesn’t want to trek out to the planter boxes or the garden year-round. It’s just not super realistic to plant herbs we use daily out, away from the house. Plus, the winter weather and frost makes it harder to keep herbs alive outside – even with modest coverings.

Thankfully, growing herbs indoors is easy! With past ventures to keep indoor plants, we’ve had to scramble to find enough little pots and small containers. But, with this herb garden, you simply need mason jars! If you’re anything like us, you’ve got loads on hand from the past decade of canning. It’s 2020 – despite the craziness, this year has been so far, it’s time to embrace the convenience, aesthetic, and ease of mason jar gardening.

Regardless of if you’ve canned in the past, Mason jars are easily and readily available. Additionally, they’re inexpensive and have a timeless, almost rustic style. But the best part? They make for a no-fuss, mess-free herb garden. Simply follow the steps below to get started!

You’ll Need…

  • Quart Mason jars
  • Small rocks or gravel
  • Potting mix
  • Seeds (or herb plants – ready to transplant!)
  • Supplies to make labels!

Fill Jars with Rocks

The small rocks or gravel are key to drainage. Since jars don’t have a system for drainage, laying ~ 2 inches of rocks, gravel, or even marbles will ensure the roots are protected from excess water damage.

Add Potting Mix

It’s important to use potting mix – not potting soil. Potting mix allows for excellent moisture retention and works best for container (i.e., jar) gardening. Fill jars with potting mix to 1-2 inches below the jar rim.

Add Seeds/Plants

If transplanting, carefully dig up the herb plant(s) (being mindful of the roots). Gently shake off excess dirt and place into the potting mix in the Mason jar. Gently cover the roots with potting mix and ensure the transplant is firmly situated. Water immediately after re-planting.

If planting from seed, follow directions on seed packet. In most cases, you can simply sow seeds directly on top of the potting mix and cover with around an inch of potting mix – lightly water.

Label Jars

If you want your kitchen windowsill to be beautifully lined with your Mason jar herb garden, having cute labels are key. Of course, their main purpose is so you can easily identify the herb in question (I’ve definitely thought “oh, I’ll remember” and I NEVER do – don’t be me!).

Label ideas:

  • A popsicle stick with hand lettering placed directly into the potting mix.
  • A piece of paper with a written label taped or glued around the jar.
  • An ID card around the neck of the jar with cute lettering and maybe a ribbon.
  • A sticker with the herb’s name.

Having a cute jar garden can actually really spruce up a space, so make sure they’re fun to look at!

What Now?

Keep your Mason jars in a location that gets at least 6 hours of sunlight (like a windowsill). Thankfully, they can be easily moved – so you can move them to a sunny location for part of the day and they can be housed more “permanently” elsewhere, the rest of the time.

Make sure to water your herbs, but be mindful not to overwater. Harvest when ready and add to your favorite kitchen dishes as you go!

Simple Vegan Food Swaps

Simple Vegan Food Swaps

On a regular day, it can be annoying to realize you’re out of a key ingredient for the meal you’re making. But during quarantine? It’s even tougher! No one should be running to the store last minute for one item and, even if you do, chances of finding basic ingredients may be slim. But, you may be able to make it through with a few simple swaps – maybe you have these substitutions on hand!

With the help of the Food Substitutions Bible and our knowledge of veganism, we’ve created this list of simple vegan food swaps for when you’re in a pinch. The swaps won’t perfectly match the original ingredients – in some instances, they’re as close as it gets. But either way, they’re close enough to pull the meal or dish together and you may even find a swap you prefer to the original!

Butter

Image by Aline Ponce from Pixabay

When cooking, any oil or margarine will do.

When baking, use margarine or coconut oil (the kind that solidifies). With recipes that require you “cut” the butter in (like biscuits or croissants), try and use hard, frozen margarine for the best results.

If you have part of the margarine or coconut oil needed for a baked recipe, sub the rest with applesauce.

Eggs

Image by Seksak Kerdkanno from Pixabay

Replace each egg in a baking recipe with:

  • 1/3 cup applesauce
  • 1/2 pureed banana (frozen works fine)
  • 1 tablespoon ground flax seeds + 3 tablespoons water (let it sit until the flax absorbs the water)
  • 1 tabelspoon chia seeds + 3 tablespoons water (let it sit until the chia absorbs the water)
  • 1/4 cup blended silken tofu
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil + 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 can carbonated beverage (for cakes – replaces the eggs and oil!)

Sour Cream

Image by Elias Sch. from Pixabay

Sub each cup with:

  • 1 cup non-dairy yogurt
  • 1/3 cup melted margarine or coconut oil + 3/4 cup non-dairy milk + 1 teaspoon lemon juice (for baking)

Other Dairy Products

Image by Imo Flow from Pixabay
  • 1 cup half & half = 1 cup non-dairy milk (thicker the better – i.e., full fat coconut milk works better than almond milk) + 1 tablespoon melted margarine or coconut oil
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream = 2/3 cup full-fat coconut milk (other non-dairy milks will do, the thicker milk just works better) + 1/3 cup melted margarine or coconut oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk = 1 cup non-dairy milk + 1 teaspoon lemon juice or vinegar (let it sit until it starts to look “curdled,” ~5 minutes)

Garlic

Replace each fresh clove with:

  • 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt (omit 1/2 teaspoon salt from the recipe)
  • 1/2 teaspoon jarred minced garlic
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon minced shallots

Onions

For each onion, use:

  • 1 1/2 to 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 cup chopped shallots
  • 1 1/4 cups chopped leeks, green onions or scallions (white and light green parts only)
  • 1 cup frozen chopped onions

Lemon

Image by Richard John from Pixabay

Replace each tablespoon of lemon juice with 1 1/2 teaspoons of white wine vinegar, sherry vinegar, or champagne vinegar.

Sub 1 teaspoon of lemon zest with 1/2 teaspoon lemon extract.

Fresh Herbs

Image by Konstantin Kolosov from Pixabay

Sub 1 tablespoon of fresh, chopped herbs with:

  • 1 teaspoon dried herbs
  • 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon ground or powdered herbs

Breadcrumbs

Sub each cup with:

  • 3 to 4 slices of bread (dried in the oven and crushed in a food processor)
  • 3/4 cup vegan cracker crumbs
  • 1 cup crushed tortilla (dried slightly in the oven)
  • 1 cup potato chips, crushed
  • 1 cup crushed pretzels
  • 1 cup crushed cornflakes

Sugar

Replace 1 cup granulated sugar with:

  • 1 3/4 cup unsifted confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 cup light or dark brown sugar
  • 1 cup (minus 2 tablespoons) agave nectar, brown rice syrup, or maple syrup + 1/4 teaspoon baking soda (reduce the liquid in the recipe by 3 tablespoons and lower oven the temperature by 25°F).

Replace 1 cup dark brown sugar with:

  • 1 packed cup light brown sugar + 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 1 cup granulated sugar + 2 to 3 tablespoons molasses

Replace 1 cup light brown sugar with:

  • 1 cup granulated sugar + 1 to 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar + 1/2 cup granulated sugar

Replace 1 cup confectioners’ sugar with:

  • 1 cup granulated sugar + 1 tablespoon cornstarch, processed in a food processor

Flour

Image by Karolina Grabowska from Pixabay

Replace 1 cup all-purpose flour with:

  • 1 cup + 3 tablespoons cake flour
  • 1 cup self-rising flour (omit baking powder + salt from the recipe)
  • 1 1/2 cups dry breadcrumbs, finely ground

Replace 1 cup of cake flour with:

  • 1 cup pastry flour
  • 1 cup (minus 3 tablespoons) all-purpose flour + 3 tablespoons cornstarch

Replace 1 cup pastry flour with:

  • 2/3 cup all-purpose flour + 1/3 cup cake flour

Replace 1 cup self-rising flour with:

Tomatoes

Replace 1 pound of fresh tomatoes with:

  • 1 1/2 cups canned whole tomatoes
  • 6 to 8 sun-dried tomato halves (soaked in hot water)
  • 3 tablespoons tomato paste (you may need to add liquid)

How To Effectively And Safely Clean Your Phone

How To Effectively And Safely Clean Your Phone

With the coronavirus pandemic, we all need (and want) to be doing our part to reduce and slow the spread of the virus. While staying home and washing our hands is key, there may be one major thing you overlooking that’s a big ol’ germ fest: your phone.

Picture this: you run into the store to buy some essential supplies, phone in tow. When you get back to your car, you bust out the hand sanitizer and get your hands perfectly clean. But, you don’t clean your phone. And the next thing you reach for? Your germ-infested device. Quarantine won’t protect you from that.

Now, just because you’re exposed to certain germs doesn’t mean you’ll come down with a virus or illness. The germs have to come into contact with an opening in your body, but that could be a tiny crack on your finger (maybe from all that hand sanitizer?), your nose, mouth, or other scratches, etc. Having a contaminated phone really increases your risk of welcoming those germs into your body (ick).

Hence why it’s so important to keep your phone as clean as possible – particularly at a time like this.

Now, the question:

How do you safely and effectively disinfect your phone?

Image by Niek Verlaan from Pixabay

Step 1: Turn off your device. The point of this is to avoid electrical shorts, and this is especially important if your phone is NOT water-resistant.

Step 2: Use a bleach-free cleaning spray. Lysol or Clorox brands are the best kinds and won’t damage your phone, You could also use plain 60% isopropyl alcohol.

Step 3. Spray the cleaning spray directly onto a microfiber or lint-free cloth.

Step 4. Gently wipe your phone down with the damp cloth, thoroughly wiping each section on the back and front. Don’t directly wipe the charging port. Make sure to remove your phone case before cleaning and clean the case as well.

And that’s it! Do this every few days or anytime your phone is exposed to a high-risk situation (in this day and age, the grocery store is reason enough!)

Top Tips For Stocking Your Pantry For A Possible Coronavirus Quarantine

Top Tips For Stocking Your Pantry For A Possible Coronavirus Quarantine

There’s a difference between being panicked and being prepared. The CDC released a guide on steps to take to ensure you and your family remain prepared.

While it’s important to have a few essentials on hand, it’s not necessary to stockpile hand sanitizer or toilet paper. A better idea? Stock your pantry with some basics to last ~2 weeks in case your local area experiences a coronavirus outbreak. If you have what you need at home, you’ll at least be able to avoid going out in public and exposing yourself to the virus.

What foods to stock up on?

Yona Sipos, a professor of environmental and health sciences at the University of Washington’s School of Public Health, told epicurious, he suggests stocking up on canned goods, as they’re among the easiest shelf-stable food items to prepare.

Some canned foods to have handy include beans of various types, tomato products, soups, and canned squash (like pumpkin).

In addition, having some shelf-stable dry-goods are a great option. Include items like pasta, oats, nut butters, crackers, vegan bars, cereal, granola, and cooking oils and basic seasonings (i.e., salt and pepper).

Don’t forget to utilize your freezer space either! Frozen vegetables, potatoes, and premade food items are excellent choices.

It’s important to have a mix of ready-to-eat items that can be prepared with or without power (like canned foods) and items that may require a little more prep (like pasta).

Plan and Cook Smarter

Just because you’re stocking up for an “emergency” or pandemic doesn’t mean your food needs to be bland and boring. The Washington Post interviewed some chefs on tips for cooking and planning with preparedness in mind.

Padma Lakshmi told the Washington Post, “The first thing I would do, right now, before there is a panic, is start cooking.” She suggested choosing a day and batch cooking some family favorites to store in the freezer until they’re needed.

Preparedness doesn’t have to be crazy over-the-top. Simply having the right foods ready-to-eat or ready to be easily prepared is enough to be prepared and offers peace of mind.
